1960 Bandai Opel Rekord Sedan In Original Box
Beautiful battery operated, two-tone, two-door tin litho Opel Rekord Sedan with original box, insert, and instructions. Works great (forward, reverse, and steering) using its original tethered tin litho battery box/steering wheel. Grades excellent+ to near mint. Great example of 1960s styling with squared fenders, roof and rear trunk; it's two tone with creme roof and crimson red body. Embossed single plate chassis is flat black. Interior is sky blue with white polka dotted bench seats! Steering wheel is white plastic. Embossed body features the OPEL logo spelled across the front hood in large raised letters. I don't believe this model was ever imported into the U.S. Loaded with chrome plated stuff; side moldings, door handles, windshield frames, front and rear bumpers, front grille with gold finished parking lights and company logo, headlights, and rear trunk logo. Has both front and rear, white with black lettered, lithoed license plates. Front and rear windshields are original blue tinted celluloid. Tires are solid black rubber with white painted sidewalls, and embossed chrome/gold wheel covers. The tail lights are double bullet style red transparent plastic. However the left pair differ from the right (which are correct). Although they look pretty good, they not only don't match the right pair, but they're not exactly identical to each other. Most likely the left pair are replacements. According to the box the tail lights are also supposed to be electrified. The tethered blue lithoed battery box has forward and reverse buttons, as well as a large dark blue, steel lithoed steering wheel. Inside it still has its original battery instruction card. The tethering is 3 feet long and covered with its original green vinyl. The box features a large black and white illustration of the actual car. In addition to text, the front and rear aprons have schematics showing operation of the car and battery insertion. The side aprons are mostly text with the Opel logo. The corrugated box bottom is complete with original insert. It also has its original 7" x 10" instructions showing how to correctly store the toy. I've never seen this particular Bandai instruction sheet before. It's interesting to note that the box is numbered 849. This refers to the specific catalog number for the car. Ron Smith and Bill Gallagher's book, "The Big Book of Tin Toy Cars" did not have a reference to this number. In fact there was no reference to a car of this size with battery operated blinking tail lights. Size: 10½". Date Sold: Jul. 2009
